What causes Heel Pain when I Run?

Picture
PLANTAR FASCIITIS is the most common cause of heel pain in Runners

This is the most common cause of heel pain in runners on the bottom of the foot and is an inflammation in the band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that runs from the heel to the toes. This condition is most often caused by poor foot structure such as overly flat feet or high arches. It can also be caused by wearing non-supportive footwear on hard surfaces, spending long hours on your feet, or obesity. The pain from plantar fasciitis is usually a sharp, stabbing pain on the inside of the bottom of the heel that can feel like a knife sticking into your heel.

Pain from plantar fasciitis is usually most severe when you first stand on your feet in the morning. It will usually subside, but can return with prolonged standing or walking or getting up after long periods of sitting. It be worse on the days following long training runs, hill repeats or track sessions. Because this is by far the most common cause of heel pain in runners, the information on this site is directed at plantar fasciitis in runners.

The creator of the No More Heel Pain DVD is a foot and ankle surgeon, sports medicine podiatrist and a 6-time Ironman Triathlon Finisher. His sports medicine practice is limited to rapid treatment of elite runners and triathletes who simply cannot afford to take time off of training to "rest" or recover from surgery. He believes that when it comes to runners and heel pain, NO SURGERY is the BEST SURGERY.  He also believes (as a doctor and as a runner himself) that RUNNERS SHOULD RUN, not rest to heal most injuries.

With these ideas in mind, he sought to create a way for runners to heal their own plantar fasciitis as quickly as possible...all while continuing to run.

The result is the NO MORE HEEL PAIN DVD. This DVD is now available for anyone who wants to find out all the secrets used sports podiatrists to heal heel pain in elite endurance athletes caused by plantar fasciitis.

Can I run while I heal my with plantar fasciitis?

Picture
Yes!  You can heel your runner's heel pain while you continue to run. As a runner and triiathlete himself, Dr. Segler understands that runners simply want to run...not take 6 weeks off!, or worse yet, stop running.  He has developed a system of treating plantar fasciitis in runners that will heal your heel pain even as you continue to enjoy running or training for a marathon.
Don't stop running...order the DVD and get back to running without heel pain.

Can Plantar Fasciitis Heal Without Surgery?

Picture
Yes!  As a a nationally recognized expert on conditions affecting the heel, Dr. Segler created a self-treatment regimen that has been used successfully by patients in his own sports medicine and surgery practice.  His treatment regimen is so successful that he has actually not had to perform surgery (not even one time) in the past 3 years...all of his patients have been successfully treated WITHOUT surgery!

His non-surgical treatment regimen for plantar fasciitis has been improved, refined and made available to everyone suffering from heel pain in the No More Heel Pain DVD.

Why do I Need to Act Now?

Picture
The longer you have heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis, the more likely it will become that you need surgery to make it go away permanently. So it is important that you cure your heel pain as quickly as possible.

Chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia leads to a condition called fasciosis where the fascia becomes permanently thicker. The thicker plantar fascia can the press on the nerve on the bottom of the heel and make it virtually impossible to remove your heel pain symptoms without surgery.  The sooner you start curing the conditions that cause plantar fasciitis the better, and the lower the chance you will need surgery.

"Dr. Christopher Segler is one of the finest human beings I have ever met. He is dedicated to excellence in every one of his life pursuits, with an uncommon spirit of openness and kindness. He is a superb physician, and thankfully I discovered him to help me with what five months ago appeared to be a potentially insurmountable life-changing personal disaster – bilateral calcaneous fractures more commonly known as two broken heels. Thanks to Chris Segler’s medical insight and expertise, I am healed, have resumed to world-class athletics and carry within something extra: a deep and life-long gratitude due to the extraordinary medical care I received. Chris Segler’s brilliance and high expectations for my renewed health and stamina became the backbone of a 5-month treatment plan. His innovative approach – comprehensive examinations in non-hurried home visits, and his impeccable skill with podiatric problem solving, accelerated and elevated my overall wellbeing, especially given the complex nature of the bilateral predicament.  What I love most about being Chris Segler’s patient is knowing he himself lives to be the best whole person he can be. His extreme dedication to medicine and his earnest character are together and precisely what he has given to me, and what he gives to each and every patient, ensuring optimal care and results. While I have never known this degree of personal injury, the last five months of my life under the care of Dr. Chris Segler has been one of the most energized and positive experiences in my life, a fascinating journey of inspiration, trust and superb medical care. Saying thank you is simply not enough for all that this special individual has done." - Barbara Edelston Peterson, Age 54, Author, Sports Psychologist, Endurance Athlete
note: she went on to win her 7th XTERRA World Championship later that year!

"Dr. Segler is a rare and exceptional physician! I consider myself very fortunate to have found him. As a veteran marathon and ultra-runner, I've been struggling for years with a chronic and complex heel condition that has eluded numerous specialists. None have been willing or able to take the time needed to figure out what is going on and how to treat it. With Dr. Segler, it was immediately apparent that I'd finally found a doctor with genuine interest in me as an athlete and my returning to sport as a very high priority. Connecting with Dr. Segler has, for the first time since injury, given me a real sense of hope that I will be able to keep doing what I love.   Dr. Segler's knowledge of sports issues and treatments is expert and formidable. He is compassionate, patient and available to a degree that is completely unique. He is professional, yet warm and down-to-earth. Never brisk, impatient, condescending or elusive, Dr. Segler answers every question carefully and takes time and interest in educating his patient. He offers a perspective that only a doctor who is himself an endurance athlete can possess. His rates are very reasonable. With quick availability, he comes to your home and takes the time needed to do a careful history, analysis and treatment plan. He's waded through various bureaucracies on my behalf in order to get important tests done correctly. Dr. Segler is a true advocate, whose first priority is getting the job done for his patient. He is available directly by phone or email, with prompt response - hours or even minutes. How unusual is that? Amazing!   If you're an athlete of any type (or non-athlete, for that matter), dealing with a foot or ankle issue - you've found you're Doc, hands down. Dr. Segler is one of a kind!"   -  Erik C., Albany, CA

"I'm a runner who competes in the PA/USATF. I injured my achilles (tendinitis) last summer and needed to recover before the start of the cross country season (1st week of Sept).  This injury had been bothering me chronically for the last year and a half, impairing my training and in some occasions, forcing me to drop out during races. I called Dr Segler following a drop out from a local race last July. My achilles was very painful and I had difficulty walking. I'm generally a point-scorer for the team (top 5 runners) so my return to competition was much anticipated by my teammates.  Dr Segler came to my house and assessed my injury, explained what type of tendinitis I had and gave me a number of options and treatments (I think 12 in total). Most importantly for me, Dr Segler understood my need to not become totally out of shape before the XC season. Since he is a triathlete himself, he knows what competition means, the efforts you've put into your training, and the satisfaction of a good race. For my type of injury, most doctors would simply recommend to (heavily) use NSAIDs, rest and not run at all for a number of weeks.  Dr Segler gave me additional options to maintain a minimum level of fitness while my tendon was recovering. I followed his advice to the letter and got better in a few weeks, while maintaining some training. I returned to competition on Aug 27th, ran many of this year's XC races, and contributed to my team achieving 4th place at the PA/USATF 2011 XC Grand Prix. More recently I completed a half and full marathon part of the PA/USATF road racing Grand Prix and was part of the "A" scoring team. A great feeling ! I think we will take 3rd place in the Grand Prix this season, the best the club has done in years ... Thanks Doc !"   -  Patrick M., San Francisco, CA

"Dr. Segler is an excellent doctor for athletes with foot and ankle problems for several reasons: 1) As an athlete, he has empathy for the time and effort investment of training and fitness, and places value on retaining fitness as much as possible.  He will work with you to help you keep your fitness while fixing or recovering from your injury.  2) He is exceptional in that he spends as much time with you analyzing and discussing your problem as you need.  I have never before had the opportunity to discuss an ailment for 1.5 hours with a medical doctor.  After that amount of time and intellectual effort, I feel confident that I understand the nature and extent of my injury, and what I need to do to resolve it.   3) His house call business model is also unique, and can simplify the logistics of finding a suitable appointment time and location. Note that with all these strong qualities, he can afford to not accept/process insurance claims, but his pricing is competitive and he is worth every penny.  He provides timely invoices by which one can submit insurance claims oneself."   -   Dr. M., Livermore, CA

"I unfortunately ruptured (snapped) my Achilles tendon while snowboarding this winter.  At first I was hoping it wasn't that bad, but after doing a little web search soon realized it was either a partial or full rupture and needed some medical attention stat.  I called Dr. Segler and explained what had happened and explained I thought I had some sort of rupture.  I wound up making an appointment.  What was cool was that he had me go to a local place to get a MRI before my appointment with him, as he would need the MRI to diagnose the condition properly.  Cool because it  saved me time and an unnecessary initial appointment & $ as I was confident I had some sort of serious rupture.  It turned out it was a full rupture and I was in surgery in two days (quick is crucial for this surgery if possible).  Surgery went well and I am well on my way to getting my mojo back.  I've got nothing but good things to say about my experience with Dr. S. and think he's an athlete's ace.  Trying to not make this too long I'll surmise and just say he is knowledgeable, informative (drawings and all), professional, progressive, a good listener, an excellent surgeon, and he makes house calls!  My experience with Dr. Segler has been truly top notch and I highly recommend the good Doc." -    Richard I., San Francisco, CA
"I highly recommend Dr. Christopher Segler at Doc On The Run. Dr. Segler looked at my badly sprained, and still swollen, ankle a week after I had been to acute care at UCSF, (where x-rays showed no broken bones, so they told me to stay off of it, gave me an ace bandage and sent me hobbling away). In a house call visit, he spent time listening to how I had sprained my ankle, did a thorough examination and explained in expert detail about my injury and what he recommended that I do next, so that I could heal as completely as possible. He is a true patient advocate and expert in his field. Knowing a doctor who I can trust completely for advice, who will return my phone calls promptly, and who believes in educating his patients, is invaluable. If you need a podiatric surgeon, sports medicine specialist or a honest second opinion, call Dr. Segler. He is the best!"  -   Shona D. - ankle sprain patient in San Francisco
